C3D-E – The Perfect Memory [MIDI_bug]

Fragmented and delicate, The Perfect Memory by C3D-E strikes a precise balance between energy and immersion. Off-kilter subwoofer pulses, liquid melodic fragments, and wide-ranging thematic structures: the artist’s trajectory has always remained on the fringes of the spotlight. Very little is known about his identity, aside from his connection to Acting Press, a key label in the experimental club scene of the past decade, which he co-founded alongside PLO Man. His approach applies the analytical mindset of IDM to dub and ambient structures, often drifting into lo-fi territory, not only through the warmth of analog sound, but by embracing technical imperfection as a way of building something new.

His productions pay tribute to the past while carrying a distinctly pioneering drive, much like every release on the label. The Perfect Memory moves in the same direction. Released by MIDI_bug exclusively on vinyl, the record finds its defining qualities in its dynamic range and in a blend of sounds that feels both fused together and sharply detailed. It’s a work designed first and foremost to hit the club like a seismic shockwave, while also offering an abstract and fluid imaginary world. The four tracks are intentionally raw, unfolding like streams of consciousness through minimal, monolithic progressions: a form of minimal techno that seeks to portray the hyper-technology of an alien civilization living, as if obscured, beneath the depths of an ocean.

The main reference point is ambient techno, explored here in some of its most extreme forms. The drum machine is stripped to the essentials, often relying on little more than the kick drum and a few heavily processed hi-hats, never static, fading in and out like a chiaroscuro stretched across time. The heavy lifting is done by the subwoofers and synthesizers, or rather by what remains of the synths themselves. At times the melodies feel sliced apart, still recognizable, yet reduced to harmony and texture at once. In certain passages they generate a kind of mystical tension, caught in a continuous pull between a futuristic, tranquil house music and near-noise eruptions softened by metric tons of reverb. C3D-E does not follow conventional structures: the themes exist in their own light, and that seismic density does not fade when the lights go out.
